Updated: Feb 5

As a parent, it's common to feel frustrated when your child seems to struggle with listening and remembering instructions. It's important to understand that sometimes, low processing could be the underlying challenges that they're facing, which will impact their communication abilities.

One of the challenges of low processing abilities, is that it interferes with a one's ability to understand and remember information. Processing abilities refer to the brain's capacity to take in, make sense of, and use information.

When someone has low processing abilities, they will also have difficulty recalling information and remembering multi-step instructions at the same pace as everyone else, leading to frustration and misunderstandings.

So, how can low processing abilities impact communication? When someone has low processing abilities, they may struggle to process and understand spoken or written information quickly.

This leads to challenges when communicating with someone who is emotional or upset, Low processors need need more time to understand what's being said or to respond. This can lead to misunderstandings or tension because it's hard for them to keep up with the pace of normal conversation, and it can be tough for you to always remember to slow down. It's a common issue that can be tricky for both of you to navigate..

It's important for parents to recognize the signs of low processing abilities in their kids. Some signs may include:

  • Difficulty following multi-step instructions

  • Trouble remembering information or details

  • Struggles with processing and responding to questions

  • Challenges with organizing thoughts and ideas when communicating

If you notice these signs, it's important to approach the situation with patience and understanding. It's not that they're not listening or trying not to remember, but rather, they're facing challenges due to their low processing abilities.

So, what can you do to support them?

  1. Provide clear and concise instructions, breaking tasks down into manageable steps.

  2. Use visual and write instructions down.

  3. Slow down and count to 30 when tensions are high or when the conversation is important- in order to make sure they are hearing everything that is said.

These steps are critical to ensure their success.

Remember, as a parent, your understanding and support can make a world of difference for your child. By remaining patient, providing practical solutions, and seeking the right support, you can help your son or daughter navigate the challenges they face and improve their communication abilities.
