The Hidden Reason Your Child Hates Writing

As a veteran educator and founder of EmpowerU Academic Performance Coaching, I've seen countless students grapple with writing. Parents often ask me, "Why does my child struggle so much with putting words on paper?" The answer might surprise you—and it's not about grammar rules or vocabulary lists.

Let's dive into the heart of the matter. Writing woes often stem from an unexpected source: reading habits and cognitive processes we rarely consider. I'm about to share insights that will transform how you view your child's writing journey.

The Reading-Writing Connection

First, let's shatter a common myth. Writing and reading aren't separate skills—they're two sides of the same coin. In my years as a special education teacher, I noticed something crucial: kids who read widely wrote with greater ease and creativity. It's not magic; it's exposure. These young bookworms absorb language patterns, sentence structures, and storytelling techniques without even realizing it.

But what about children who don't read much? They're starting their writing journey with a significant disadvantage. Imagine trying to paint without ever having seen art. That's the challenge facing students with limited reading experience when they sit down to write.

The Invisible Force: Working Memory

Now, let's talk about the invisible force that shapes your child's writing ability: working memory. This cognitive powerhouse is the unsung hero of the writing process. It's responsible for juggling thoughts, organizing ideas, and transforming abstract concepts into concrete words on the page.

Here's a scenario I've encountered countless times: A student has brilliant ideas but struggles to get them down on paper. It's not laziness or lack of effort—it's a working memory that's being pushed to its limits. These children often feel frustrated and defeated before they've written a single sentence.

Practical Strategies for Writing Success

But don't worry—there's hope. Through my work at EmpowerU, I've developed strategies that can dramatically improve your learner's writing skills in months, not years. Let's explore a practical technique you can start using today. This is applicable for students of ANY age!

This three-minute writing sprint is pure genius.

  1. Grab a Spiral Notebook or Composition Book and a timer, your phone will work!

  2. Read a story starters or journal prompt: (Here are a few)

    • "Lucas had walked past this hallway a thousand times, but today something was different.

    • "During the school assembly, a folded note suddenly appeared on Jake's desk. Nobody saw who placed it there, but the words were crystal clear:

    • "In the dusty attic box, Sarah found a photograph that didn't make sense. Her grandmother, who claimed to have never left their small town, was standing next to the Eiffel Tower

    • "When you rescued the tiny creature from the storm drain, you thought it was just another stray. But as it looked up, you realized this was something entirely... different..

  3.  Set a timer for 30 seconds: Allow them to brainstorm

  4.  Set the timer for 3 minutes instruct your son/daughter to write continuosly

  5. Don't stop to edit

  6. After 3 minutes: Count the Total Words Written

  7. Repeat every day for 30 days and watch writing soar!
